Autoinducer-2 production in Campylobacter jejuni contributes to chicken colonization.

چکیده
Inactivation of luxS, encoding an AI-2 biosynthesis enzyme, in Campylobacter jejuni strain 81-176 significantly reduced colonization of the chick lower gastrointestinal tract, chemotaxis toward organic acids, and in vitro adherence to LMH chicken hepatoma cells. Thus, AI-2 production in C. jejuni contributes to host colonization and interactions with epithelial cells.

Quorum sensing and production of autoinducer-2 in Campylobacter spp., Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in foods.
Autoinducer molecules are utilized by gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria to regulate density-dependent gene expression by a mechanism known as quorum sensing. PCR and DNA sequencing results showed that Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli possessed luxS, which is responsible for autoinducer-2 (AI-2) production. Using a Vibrio harveyi luminescence assay, the production of AI-2 was o...
متن کاملDistribution of colonization and antimicrobial resistance genes in Campylobacter jejuni isolated from chicken.
Campylobacter jejuni is an important worldwide foodborne pathogen commonly found as a commensal organism in poultry that can reach high numbers within the gut after colonization. Although information regarding some genes involved in colonization is available, little is known about their distribution in strains isolated specifically from chickens and whether there is a linkage between antimicrob...
متن کاملThe Campylobacter jejuni response regulator, CbrR, modulates sodium deoxycholate resistance and chicken colonization.
Two-component regulatory systems play a major role in the physiological response of bacteria to environmental stimuli. Such systems are composed of a sensor histidine kinase and a response regulator whose ultimate function is to affect the expression of target genes. Response regulator mutants of Campylobacter jejuni strain F38011 were screened for sensitivity to sodium deoxycholate. A mutation...
متن کاملColonization factors of Campylobacter jejuni in the chicken gut
Campylobacter contaminated broiler chicken meat is an important source of foodborne gastroenteritis and poses a serious health burden in industrialized countries. Broiler chickens are commonly regarded as a natural host for this zoonotic pathogen and infected birds carry a very high C. jejuni load in their gastrointestinal tract, especially the ceca. This eventually results in contaminated carc...
متن کاملCampylobacter infection of broiler chickens in a free-range environment
Campylobacter jejuni is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, with contaminated chicken meat considered to represent a major source of human infection. Biosecurity measures can reduce C. jejuni shedding rates of housed chickens, but the increasing popularity of free-range and organic meat raises the question of whether the welfare benefits of extensive production are com...
